According to one study, cats recognize their owner’s names.
Japanese scientists conducted experiments on 48 cats. They show them photos of their owners or feline friends and call out real and fictitious names. Scientists suggest that if a cat looks at a photo longer when the real name is mentioned, it implies, it associates it with the person in the image.
Japanese researchers determined after their trial that cats identified the names of their partners with their looks without training.

Kyoto University researchers included 48 cats in their investigation. All of these cats had at least two additional pets, and 19 had lived in a family home, while 29 had lived in a cat café.
Two experiments were carried out to investigate the cognitive abilities of cats. In the first trial, the cats were shown a photograph of a feline that they shared their home with.
When a name was called, their responses to these photos were recorded. According to scientists, if the cat stared at the pictures for a longer period of time, it signified it knew the genuine name of the shown animal.
“When the false name was announced household cats paid more attention to the screen, suggesting a ‘expectancy violation effect,” the researchers said in the study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The second experiment involved 26 cats who were given photographs of their owners or their own. It was shown that felines have a stronger bond with their colleagues than with humans. The capacity to learn the owner’s name, on the other hand, was obvious.
“This study gives evidence that cats associate a companion’s name and matching face without formal training,” claimed the researchers.
