A major TikTok hack has disclosed data from billions of user accounts

Researchers in cyber security discovered a massive data breach in TikTok’s servers. This is believed to include over 2 billion user accounts that could be compromised as a consequence.

TikTok is rejecting reports that it was hacked after a hacker gang shared photos purportedly containing the app’s source code and sensitive user information.

TikTok has simply said that its team “discovered no indication of a security vulnerability” in response to repeated inquiries.

According to Bleeping Computer, the hackers uploaded the photographs on a site, claiming to have gotten the data from a breached TikTok server.

The hacker group “AgainstTheWest” claims to have over 790 GB of user data, platform statistics, code, and other information. They also claim to have taken data from WeChat, a Chinese messaging service, although the firm has yet to reply to inquiries.

According to TikTok spokesperson Maureen Shanahan,

We have determined that the data samples in issue are all publicly available and are not the result of a breach of TikTok systems, networks, or databases.

We feel that users do not need to take any proactive measures, and we remain dedicated to the safety and security of our worldwide community.

Troy Hunt, regional director at Microsoft and inventor of the Have I Been Pwned tool, also commented on the issue. He said that the evidence of a hack is “very ambiguous” thus far. He claims that some of the data is fake or is only for testing purposes.

Hunt, however, was unable to confirm if the hacker’s database contained stolen data. If you have a TikTok account, we recommend changing your password and enabling two-factor authentication.
