Qualcomm Introduces New Snapdragon Chips for Low-Cost Phones
Hardware
New name. The same hardware.
Following the Snapdragon 8 and 7 Gen 1, Qualcomm has officially revealed its newest smartphone chipsets, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 (SD6G1) and 4 Gen 1 (SD4G1), intended for mid-range and low-cost phones, respectively.
Qualcomm has not yet released the full spec sheet, however we do know that the SD6G1 is built on TSMC’s 4 nm technology, whilst the SD4G1 is built on the 6 nm node.
Both processors contain eight cores, however the SD4G1’s CPU cores can only run at 2.0GHz, whilst the SD6G1’s primary cores can run at 2.2GHz.

Qualcomm hasn’t said anything regarding the Adreno GPUs included within the processors.
Qualcomm has simply said that the GPU is 35% more powerful than previously, with a 40% increase in processing capability, but has not specified which chip was compared. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 has a 15% faster CPU and a 10% better GPU, and we assume this is a comparison with the Snapdragon 480/480+ since Qualcomm does not have any other processors in the 400 family.
The 12-bit Spectra Triple image signal processor (ISP) in the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 offers 200MP cameras and native HDR picture capture.
It also makes use of the 7th generation Qualcomm AI Engine to improve overall speed and efficiency, as well as the bokeh effect and other features.
It includes Wi-Fi 6E connection and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X62 5G modem from the fourth generation.
Qualcomm employed an AI Engine on the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, however it wasn’t the most recent.
This chip’s Spectra Triple ISP can support 108MP cameras and can reduce the noise using Multi-frame Noise Reduction technology.
It also includes 5G capability, courtesy of the Snapdragon X51 5G modem, but no Wi-Fi 6E.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 smartphones will be available in roughly three weeks on Vivo’s upcoming iQOO Z6 Lite, while Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 devices will be available in Q1 2023.
