Flood-hit communities in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province wade through water after devastating monsoon rains submerged villages and roads.

Thousands of rescue workers in Pakistan are battling heavy rains and thick mud in a desperate effort to find survivors after devastating flash floods struck the country’s northern mountainous regions. The disaster has already claimed the lives of at least 344 people, leaving communities shattered and authorities racing against time.

People wading through floodwaters in Pakistan as heavy monsoon rains cause severe flooding, destroying homes, displacing families, and blocking roads.

Most of the destruction has been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where torrential monsoon rains triggered severe flooding and landslides. Entire homes were swept away, while rocks and debris buried large parts of villages. Officials have warned that with more heavy rainfall forecast in the coming days, the risk of further destruction remains extremely high.

According to Bilal Ahmed Faizi, spokesperson for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s rescue services, the Buner district has been the hardest hit. “At least 208 people have lost their lives in Buner alone, and nearly 10 to 12 villages have been completely buried under rubble,” he told reporters. Rescue teams, supported by locals, are working tirelessly to dig survivors out of collapsed houses and landslides.

Despite their efforts, officials fear that many people are still trapped under the debris. “There is growing concern that dozens may still be buried. Sadly, the chances of survival for those under the rubble are very slim,” Faizi added.

The tragedy has once again highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather. Flash floods and landslides are becoming increasingly frequent during the monsoon season, threatening rural communities that often lack proper infrastructure and emergency preparedness.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and move to safer locations. International aid agencies have also expressed concern, warning that thousands of displaced families will require urgent food, shelter, and medical assistance in the coming days.
