Pakistan to Implement 57 New Car Safety Standards from October
Starting October 2025, Pakistan will enforce 57 international safety standards on all locally manufactured cars, fulfilling commitments made under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, official sources told Pakmatters.

Key Reforms Introduced
- Pakistan Automotive Institute: To be established for monitoring and certifying auto parts quality.
- Ban on “Type-D” accidental vehicles: Such imports will no longer be allowed.
- Import Policy Update: Amendments effective September 30.
Regulatory Oversight
- Engineering Development Board (EDB):
- Will oversee licensing for all vehicle imports and sales.
- Ensures compliance with new safety standards.
- Defective Vehicle Recalls:
- Companies legally required to recall faulty vehicles or parts.
- Penalties: 2–3 years imprisonment + heavy fines for non-compliance.
Looking Ahead
- Motor Vehicle Industry Development Act 2025:
- All new vehicles sold from 2025 onward will fall under this act.
- Marks a major overhaul of Pakistan’s auto regulatory system.
