Donation for flood help in Pakistan

In response to the tragic floods in Pakistan, Meta is donating 125 million rupees to UNICEF, Hands, and Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) to assist flood-affected people.

The gift will go toward emergency relief, food, water, and sanitation, as well as helping children return to school in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.

Prior to the donation, when the floods started, Facebook’s Safety Check was enabled, allowing users to notify friends and family that they were okay.

A Crisis page was also created, where users could utilise the Community Help function to request and volunteer assistance from various communities.

“Pakistan is experiencing one of the biggest natural catastrophes we have ever witnessed.” Millions of people are impacted, and the whole country is coming together to help them at this tough time,” said Jordi Fornies, Meta’s Director of Emerging Markets, APAC.

“We hope that our donations will benefit the people affected by the disaster, and our thoughts are with these towns and families as they work to recover,” he said.

Furthermore, Meta’s ‘Data for Good’ initiative has started its Disaster Maps programme and is supplying data to regional response partners. CrisisReady (a cooperation between Direct Relief and Harvard University) is one of those partners that has concentrated on merging data sources into situation reports that are utilized daily by thousands of on-the-ground first responders.

“The torrential monsoon rains over the previous weeks have destroyed or washed away people’s houses, impacting millions of people, including children,” said Michael J. Nyenhuis, President and CEO of UNICEF USA.

“With winter approaching in certain areas of the nation, we want immediate assistance to continue our relief work in Pakistan and support for children and their families.” “We want to thank Meta for all of his help,” he added.

Communities on Meta-owned platforms have collected over a million dollars for non-profits assisting with flood relief efforts. Leading non-governmental organisations from all over the world have also raised significant funds using Facebook and Instagram.

“We will rebuild schools, provide 2nd Chance Accelerated learning programmes with life skills (psychosocial support, climate change, and digital literacy), and give hygiene & health with dignity kits,” stated Baela Raza Jamil, CEO of ITA.

“This is a comprehensive and inclusive strategy to #BuildingBackBetter by engaging homes, communities, schools, parents, children, particularly teenage females and teachers embedded within government systems for effective disaster response and preparation,” she said.
