Svante Paabo is the recipient of the coveted award for his research of human evolution.

The first award announcement of the year was made on Monday.

The Nobel Prizes, established in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and rich businessman Alfred Nobel, have been given since 1901, while the economics prize was introduced later.

Pääbo learned the news while sipping his coffee.
