The next smartphone camera from Samsung will have a resolution of 450 MP.

Samsung has registered trademark the name “Hexa2pixel,” which is defined as “image sensors for photographic equipment” in the file.

This was first noticed by GalaxyClub, but now Ice Universe has tweeted about the trademark and teased its resolution. Samsung has registered the moniker “Hexa2pixel” for a future sensor with 450MP resolution.


According to the tip, the forthcoming Hexa2pixel image sensor will provide 36-in-1 pixel binning (a set of 66 pixels fused into one). This is far more than the present Tetracell (22) and Nonapixel (33) layouts.

If the desired resolution is 12MP, that implies it will compress 432MP into a single picture, which may be rounded to 450MP. This is more than twice the resolution of Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 (1/1.22″, 0.64m pixels) and HP3 (1/1.4″, 0.56m) 200MP sensors.

Both HP sensors produce 12MP and 50MP images, and given the “2” in Hexa2pixel, it is likely to produce multiple images as well. If the arrangement is 33 or 66, the output resolution should be 12MP or 48MP, respectively. Because putting so many pixels onto a single picture renders them small, binning will be required.

For the time being, we only know that Samsung is developing such a sensor, and it is uncertain when it will be available. More will most likely be heard next year.
