The equipment of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) worth Rs. 5 million was allegedly taken from its cabinet at a traffic signal in Lahore.
According to the data, unidentified robbers smashed into its cabinet and took the expensive equipment from the city’s Mughalpura Chowk.
The police then filed a FIR based on the allegation of Security Supervisor Sajid, who discovered the event during his visit.
It should be noted that the Rs. 12 billion Lahore Safe City Project is also encountering issues with its monitoring system, which includes face and license plate recognition, traffic management, and police notifications.
According to reports, 35% of cameras are inoperable, leaving numerous critical corridors unmonitored.
Meanwhile, 2,500 of Lahore’s 7,678 cameras are not operational, and around 1,000 face recognition cameras have failed.
The PSCA believes that face recognition technology is crucial to the safe city project. The surveillance system allows for number plate monitoring, traffic management, and aids in law enforcement and crime prevention.
The agency was planned to deploy 8,000 face recognition cameras covering 137,000 places around the city, according to the original plan. However, for unclear reasons, it was not deployed.
