SHARJAH: Police in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have fined supporters who were part in the rioting after the Pakistan vs. Afghanistan match.

Pakistan won a one-wicket thriller over Afghanistan in the Asia Cup earlier this week in Sharjah, which upset some Afghan supporters in the stadium.

Social media videos of supporters fighting and vandalized stadium property following Wednesday’s game went viral.

The spectators engaged in the sad occurrence were fined AED3,000 (about Rs190,000) by Sharjah police. The police have also warned that if such an incident occurs again, those involved would be deported.

Pakistan defeated Afghanistan when Naseem Shah struck two sixes off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the final over to get to the T20 competition final on Sunday.

The problem started after Afghanistan speed bowler Fareed Ahmad got into a heated argument with Pakistan’s Asif Ali after dismissing the batsman.

An angry Asif hit Fareed with his bat before players and the umpire intervened to diffuse the situation.

The heated debate moved from the pitch to the stands, with footage surfacing showing Afghanistan supporters pulling off chairs and tossing them towards Pakistan fans wearing Pakistan jerseys.

Ramiz Raja, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), also condemned rowdy fan behaviour, saying, “You don’t associate mob violence with cricket, and this is unacceptable.”

“This game does not want such an atmosphere. The images were extremely bad, and this isn’t the first time such an event has occurred. Emotions should be kept under control, we own our fans, and we have filed a complaint with the ICC (International Cricket Council).”
