WASHINGTON – The United States imposed fresh sanctions on the Taliban on Tuesday in response to their oppressive treatment of women and children in Afghanistan.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced a new visa limitation policy for current or former Taliban militants and anyone who suppress women via restrictive rules and violence.
Blinken made the news on International Day of the Girl Child, observed by the United Nations.
“As an example, Afghanistan has been the only nation in the world for more than a year where females are routinely prevented from attending education beyond the sixth grade, with no end in sight,” Blinken added.
Following the withdrawal of US troops in August 2021, the Taliban prohibited females from attending secondary school. Women, on the other hand, are permitted to attend university.
A recent suicide explosion in a Kabul classroom killed and injured scores of students who were studying for examinations.
According to the United Nations, 53 people have died, including 46 girls and young women.
